Everton’s sell-on clause in Anthony Gordon’s Newcastle United contract is proving an issue.

The summer transfer window has not even opened yet and already Everton are proving problematic in transfer negotiations

It is understood that Everton hold a 15 per cent sell-on clause with Gordon, which will secure them a slice of the profit Newcastle potentially earn on his sale.

However, the Magpies are already finding that the clause included by former Everton chief Kevin Thelwell is proving problematic.

Everton’s Anthony Gordon clause proving problematic for Newcastle

Gordon’s agent has now met with Barcelona as he begins to work on the opportunities on the table for the 25-year-old.

The Spanish giants are not alone in their interest, with Bayern Munich also keen to sign Gordon over the coming months.

Although this should be good news for Everton, the Daily Mail have reported that there is currently a £20m difference in what Newcastle are asking and what Bayern are willing to pay.

As things stand, there is a clear expectation for Gordon to leave Newcastle this summer.

However, Newcastle will naturally be looking to profit as much as possible, with Everton’s sell-on clause needing to be considered in negotiations.

Valued in the region of £80m by Newcastle and sold by Everton for around £45m, the Blues could be in line for a windfall circa £5.5m.

Sam Allardyce has criticised Gordon’s antics to earn himself a transfer away from Merseyside, which appear to be emerging again on Tyneside.

The positive news for Everton is that there is interest in Gordon from some top clubs.

Whether those clubs are willing to cough up what Newcastle are asking is another matter.
