The Portugal international faced relegation with Southampton last season and could make it two years in a row with West Ham.

At that price range, there would be no surprise in seeing Everton walk away from their interest in the 21-year-old.

There is a belief that Liverpool are also interested in Fernandes, with talks having already taken place with the player’s camp.

Everton head into summer with a bloated midfield

Everton actually head into the summer with more than enough options in the middle of the park.

Idrissa Gana Gueye has not signed his contract extension yet, with a belief that his camp are stalling on the option.

The Senegal international could, therefore, leave at the end of the season as a free agent.

Everton want to add another midfielder in the summer, which only adds to the competition between Tim Iroegbunam and Merlin Rohl for the starting spot alongside James Garner.

Competition is certainly healthy, but a big-money addition like Fernandes, for example, would eliminate that competition given the price tag.

There is a lot to be considered in the midfield department ahead of the summer window.
