Four players Everton may have to sell as Premier League seeks points deduction

The Premier League wants Everton to face a 12-point deduction for breaching its rules on profit and sustainability, which might force Sean Dyche to sell a handful of players.

Reports by The Telegraph note that the Premier League is pushing for Everton to get a points deduction. An independent commission is currently reviewing its case against the Toffees for sustaining significant financial losses. The Blues can expect to get its verdict later this year.

Everton far exceeded the losses allowed with the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules over the past three accounting years. But the Goodison Park natives believe they have complied with all rules, despite recording losses of £304m when the allowed limit is £105m.

An array of sanctions are available to the commission. But the Premier League is pushing for Everton to receive an extremely severe punishment and recommends a 12-point deduction. Alternatively, the Blues may receive a fine and/or a transfer embargo if they are found guilty.

The commission deducting Everton any points may even put the Blues’ future in the Premier League in doubt. Dyche has only overseen two wins in nine matches so far this season to sit 16th in the table. The Blues are just three points above the drop zone after six defeats so far.

Relegation could even put Everton’s future in doubt after losing £44.7m in 2022, £121.3m in 2021, £139.9m in 2020, £111.8m in 2019 and £13.1m in 2018. So, Everton News has looked at four players Dyche might have to sell if Everton get a points deduction for breaching FFP…

Everton may listen to offers for Newcastle target Amadou Onana

Reports have already surfaced in iNews that Everton may listen to offers for Amadou Onana in January. The 22-year-old is also the subject of interest from Newcastle United, who have monitored the midfielder this season. The Toon would rather explore loan deals in January.

Everton’s FFP concerns might tempt Newcastle to advance their interest in Onana, however. Goodison chiefs were also willing to sell the Belgian for the right price this summer. Everton expected teams to target Onana’s transfer but no offers were forthcoming in the off-season.

Dyche would rue losing Onana but his market value may go a long way to helping Everton’s troubled finances. The nine-cap international has started in each of the Blues’ nine Premier League games this term. The Daily Mail cited an asking price of more than £60m in August.

Everton may have to sell Jarrad Branthwaite, despite his new contract

Everton struck gold in January 2020 when former director of football Marcel Brands signed Jarrad Branthwaite from Carlisle United. The Toffees only paid £1m to sign the centre-back, who was just 17 years old at the time. But he might now bank the Blues a mammoth profit.

Branthwaite has become one of the pillars of Dyche’s side after spending last season on loan with PSV Eindhoven. Everton also moved to lock the England U21 enforcer down with a new contract until June 2027 earlier in October. But their finances may still necessitate a transfer.

According to The Athletic, the Toffees’ perilous position could force Everton to sell Onana or Branthwaite in the next year. The pair are the two prized assets who could generate Everton the biggest fees. Branthwaite also has interest from some of the top Premier League teams.

Reports by the Daily Mail right before Branthwaite agreed to sign a new contract noted that Manchester City and Manchester United are both keeping tabs on the Everton ace. The Red Devils may even target his switch as soon as January as his new terms will not prevent bids.

Jordan Pickford was Tottenham’s top transfer target earlier in 2023

Ally McCoist believed Jordan Pickford made some ‘magnificent’ saves as Everton lost 2-0 at Liverpool in October’s Merseyside derby. But for how much longer the Toffees can lay claim to having England’s No1 would be in doubt if the Premier League gets the points deduction.

Pickford would be sure to have his suitors if the 29-year-old hit the market. He has been one of the best shot-stoppers in the top-flight and for his country for the past few years. Pickford further had interest from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year before signing a new contract.

Reports by The Sun in March cited Pickford as Tottenham’s No1 target to replace Hugo Lloris in north London. Everton fighting relegation at the time played a factor in their interest in the Sunderland product. The Toffees would have asked for £35m to sell as a Championship club.

Steven Gerrard wants to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Pro League has become a real source of income for clubs in Europe. Everton may be next if Dyche has to sell on the back of the Premier League getting the points deduction it craves, too, with Al Ettifaq boss Steven Gerrard seeking a transfer for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

That is according to Alan Nixon, who reports that Gerrard is ready to target Calvert-Lewin for a lucrative transfer. The Liverpool legend could even pursue a deal in January as he strives to make Al Ettifaq a success. But it remains a doubt if Calvert-Lewin would agree to the switch.

Injury problems may have plagued Calvert-Lewin over the past few years since he scored 16 goals from 33 games in the 2020/21 Premier League season. But he is still only 26 years old. Calvert-Lewin can also be the main striker at almost any Premier League team, if he stays fit.
