How Youssef Chermiti could be set to earn Everton a ‘significant’ cash windfall

Everton have already benefitted from a cash windfall via a sell-on clause this summer, with another potentially on its way.

Earlier in the summer, Everton secured a multi-million windfall from Anthony Gordon’s transfer to Barcelona.

The addition of a sell-on clause is proving more and more popular as clubs look to profit from the future sales of their former players.

Kevin Thelwell was the man to stamp the departure of Gordon and he was – ironically – also the man to buy Youssef Chermiti at Rangers.

This is another player who could be in line to earn Everton another lump sum.

Former Everton striker Youssef Chermiti set to leave Rangers

Reporter Santi Aouna has claimed Lyon are eyeing the 22-year-old striker as an option this summer.

It is believed that a fee in the region of €20m (£17m) could be enough to secure the services of the former Everton forward.

An offer is expected to land soon, with the Toffees keeping a keen eye on the developments.

After Chermiti was sold to Rangers, it was revealed by The Athletic that a ‘significant’ sell-on clause was included in the deal.

Chermiti has impressed with Rangers, having scored some important goals against the likes of Celtic and Hearts last season.

However, that has also caught the eye of clubs on the continent, and his next move looks increasingly likely after Rangers recently signed Lawrence Shankland.

How much Everton could earn from Youssef Chermiti’s proposed move to Lyon

The exact details of the sell-on clause have not been disclosed, with the percentage typically in the region of 20%.

Gordon had a 20% sell-on clause included on the profit Newcastle United made from his sale to Barcelona.

Using that ballpark figure to map out Everton’s potential return on a £17m sale, the Toffees could bring in just under £3.5m.

This is on the basis that the sell-on clause is on the total transfer fee and not the profit Rangers would make from his sale.

Chermiti did not have a great start to life at Rangers, but the Portuguese striker was able to turn things around with some of his goals in the big games.

Everton are still enduring some striker issues of their own on Merseyside, yet the decision to move on from Chermiti has been justified.

Thierno Barry scored more goals last season (8) in the Premier League than Chermiti did during his two years on Merseyside.

A multi-million windfall from the possible sale of Chermiti to Lyon would be warmly welcomed by those at Everton.
