Kevin Thelwell was really pushing for Everton to sign £15m star

Everton find themselves in a promising position ahead of the January transfer window.

The one thing that Sean Dyche will want to take a closer look at in January is the striker situation, as Everton find themselves still lacking on the goalscoring front.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been called upon the most by the Everton manager, but he’s failed to reward his boss with just two goals to his name this season.

Beto won’t be at Everton much longer either, as a move to Italy looks extremely likely.

Interestingly, it appears as if Kevin Thelwell and Sean Dyche already have someone in their ranks that they desperately wanted at Everton.

Kevin Thelwell was really pushing for Everton to sign Youssef Chermiti

Youssef Chermiti joined Everton last year for around £15m.

However, injuries and a lack of game time have really held the striker back since making the move to Merseyside, as he’s only got around 250 minutes under his belt in over a year.

It’s becoming obvious why Thelwell and Dyche are reluctant to get rid of the striker, as their efforts to try and sign him show just how highly they rate the Portuguese.

Speaking to the Athletic, Chermiti revealed that Thelwell was constantly ringing him to try and get him to put pen to paper at Goodison Park.

“But Kevin (Thelwell) was phoning me every day saying: ‘Come to Everton as you will play and I will find you a good place.’ I liked the project. When you’re undecided, it’s good when the manager and director speak to explain it to you.

“It was tough to leave my country and my family. Everything was near to me — my friends and family. My family are still in Portugal. And everything moved quickly with Everton.”

Can Everton rely on Youssef Chermiti?

To be fair to Chermiti, he did look good in pre-season prior to suffering his injury.

However, his lack of experience in the Premier League and susceptibility to injury doesn’t bode well when you consider the fact that Armando Broja and Calvert-Lewin can also be injury-prone.

With the latter’s future up in the air, perhaps a striker could be a good option in January. But, it can be difficult to find options strong enough to come straight in and contest for a place.
