Paul Merson outlines one major ‘problem’ of Everton hiring David Moyes

Everton are under new management with David Moyes sensationally returning for a second spell at Goodison Park.

Everton fans were left delighted last week as The Friedkin Group parted ways with Sean Dyche, bringing in Moyes a couple of days later.

It was seen as a necessary step by the new owners.

Sean Dyche told The Friedkin Group he couldn’t take Everton any further, and a severance package was then negotiated before he eventually left on Thursday, just hours before the FA Cup game with Peterborough United.

The appointment of Moyes has certainly divided opinion outside of the Everton sphere, and one man who isn’t particularly sold on it is Paul Merson.

It remains to be seen if Moyes will turn out to be the right appointment.

But on the face of it, it’s certainly a sensible decision and the romance of it might just serve the club really well in the coming months.

The fans are going to be behind him and the team all the way, as Everton look to navigate away from the relegation zone.

Moyes does have a certain way of playing and arguably he’s not massively different from Dyche, which is why Paul Merson has questioned Everton’s decision.

He told Sportskeeda: “Everton have brought David Moyes in thinking it’s going to kick-start something new. But he’s an experienced Sean Dyche if you ask me! I like Moyes, but I don’t understand what he offers more than Dyche. He left the club 11 years ago and you can’t tell me Everton hasn’t changed in that time.

“Moyes is going to set Everton up exactly like Dyche and that’s the problem.”

Merson also feels Moyes will lose his first game against Aston Villa tonight by a scoreline of 1-0.

What David Moyes said about style of play on return to Everton

There are undoubtedly similarities in the way that Moyes and Dyche teams play.

Realistically, Everton fans won’t be able to expect the flashy, attacking style of football they have craved for so long.

But at the moment it’s simply all about staying in the Premier League, and a pragmatic approach will surely be the way forward.

In his first press conference earlier this week, Moyes placed emphasis on getting results for Everton, saying: “I’m going to try and play to win as many games as I possibly can to get myself out of this position. Then, I’ll start thinking about how my style is going to develop and what I’m going to do to make that work.

He recognises the nature of the situation right now, and knows it’s about grinding results out to get points on the board. Everotn fans will just hope there’s more of an attacking threat than there was under Dyche.
