Everton managed to grab a stoppage-time equaliser against Liverpool in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

James Tarkowksi volleyed home a sensational goal in the 98th minute to send the Everton fans into raptures.

The emotions spilt over at the full-time whistle as the referee produced four red cards to Abdoulaye Doucoure, Curtis Jones, Arne Slot and Sipke Hulshoff.

Doucoure was spotted celebrating in front of the Liverpool supporters after the game which Jones took offence to.

Virgil van Dijk was also visibly rattled in his post-match press conference and made an embarrassing claim about the referee.

Virgil van Dijk appeared to blame referee in Everton’s 2-2 draw vs Liverpool

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk suggested that the referee was favouring Everton and allowed the game to go on too long.

“I think it was over extra time (Tarkowski’s goal),” van Dijk explained.

“I think the referee had a big part in the game today in terms of certain challengers were given a foul and similar didn’t.”

The Dutchman admitted it felt like a defeat for his side and then proceeded to make a subtle dig at Everton fans.

Everton fans certainly loved Tarkowski’s late goal as some even ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the defender.

Though, Van Dijk was less than impressed, as he made a subtle dig at their reaction to the goal, saying: “We all know this is their cup final.”

Clearly, the Reds skipper was still bitter about the result, having already tried to attribute blame on the officiating.

He also insisted that Doucoure was trying to provoke Liverpool supporters at the end.

Attention now turns to the weekend for Moyes and his staff, as Everton make the trip down south to the capital to take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Victory could see them move 13 points clear of the relegation zone, so with each passing week, Moyes’ side are getting closer to their goal of Premier League survival.
