Richard Masters’ ‘brutal’ comments will be a real slap in the face to Everton after West Ham defeat

Everton’s issues were there for all to see on Wednesday evening in their defeat against West Ham United.

David Moyes, once again, shared his public concerns ahead of the new season after the game.

The 62-year-old has some major worries as Moyes is demanding more signings at Everton ahead of the curtain raiser against Leeds United.

Everton have been handed £100m to spend this summer by the Friedkins, but face a major rebuild after years of struggles due to PSR.

Fortunately, Everton can spend to some extent without worrying about PSR, but the big six clubs continue to spend at a rate which is unachievable for the likes of Everton.

But some of the comments made by Premier League CEO Richard Masters will only rub salt in the wounds on Merseyside.

Everton will be frustrated by Richard Masters’ latest comments

The Friedkin Group are leveraging more investment at Everton as they aim to take the Toffees up the league.

Clearly, this summer is proving difficult for the likes of Everton as the top dogs continue to splash the cash at an obscene rate.

Speaking to NBC Sports following Everton’s defeat against West Ham, Masters doubled down on the system in place in the Premier League.

“The Premier League is a brutal meritocracy and part of the offer we have for promoted clubs, or any club that thinks relegation could happen to them over a five-year period, is the parachute payment system,” he said.

“The way we push revenue around the league and distribute it is the most equitable in Europe. So, every club has a chance.”

The last line will really dig deep on Merseyside, with Everton forced to sell the likes of Amadou Onana and Anthony Gordon over recent years to meet PSR’s demands.

Everton are in a position where huge investment is needed this summer, but the club will be limited to what they can do because of the regulations currently in place.

Despite the rules, the likes of Manchester United are spending huge money on the back of their worst season in Premier League history.

Does every club really have a ‘chance’?

Everton’s frustration is clear in the transfer window

Although the finances are in a much better place, Everton still cannot go out and spend at a huge rate.

Smart investment is needed by the Toffees, whilst the likes of United are able to splurge massive money on Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and potentially Benjamin Sesko next.

That is a transfer window which Everton could only dream of. Yet, on the back of a shocking campaign, United are spending at a rate which will surpass what Everton have spent in recent years.

Only a matter of weeks ago, it was revealed some of Man United’s business was done through a sister company to avoid PSR’s wrath.

Of course, it all comes down to how much money is coming into the club, and Everton’s new stadium will transform their finances.

But for Masters to suggest every club has a chance in the Premier League will be a real slap in the face for the likes of Everton.
