The Friedkin Group should be embarrassed as Andy Burnham makes Everton admission

Everton fan Andy Burnham looks set to become the new Prime Minister after Sir Keir Starmer resigned.

A Toffee is likely to be leading the nation within a matter of weeks, and after Zohran Mamdani – the Mayor of New York – was informed about the development, a conversation about Everton ensued.

Burnham has now replied to Mamdani, and his response really ought to make The Friedkin Group think twice about how Everton are currently being perceived – inside and outside of England.

Andy Burnham says he has “suffered” as an Everton fan

Speaking to Mark Chapman on BBC 5 Live Sport, Mamdani said: “I wish him well. I don’t think he’s an Arsenal supporter though? I mean, at least you can respect that someone has suffered, you know? I like it when I meet someone who’s a fan of a team that hasn’t just won and won and won.”

Burnham – who is also fond of Celtic – replied: “‘Suffered’ is putting it mildly! 😂”

Of course, the outgoing Mayor of Greater Manchester is ultimately just having a laugh with Mamdani, but considering it has been more than 18 months since The Friedkin Group purchased Everton in December 2024, you would like to think the general image of the club would have somewhat changed since then.

However, the Toffees are still being perceived as a side who really do put their fanbase through a tough time.

Even a run to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup or FA Cup would be enough to make Everton fans feel a bit more hopeful about their beloved club and the future, but as things stand, there is very little to shout about, and it is quite demoralising.

A run of seven games without a win to end last season has done little to change that feeling around the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and David Moyes himself is hardly helping with his downbeat comments during press conferences.

Without a doubt, The Friedkin Group need to make sure they take full advantage of this summer transfer window – Burnham and Everton fans across the planet deserve to feel proud of the club, and also hopeful that there is a plan in place to end their suffering with some form of success soon.
