Everton are very close to confirming their third signing of the summer in the form of Mark Travers.

The Bournemouth goalkeeper is set to embark on a new adventure in Merseyside with David Moyes looking to experiment with his keeper situation.

Travers agreed a deal with Everton, and it’s expected that the 26-year-old will have his medical on Monday, according to Journalist Alex Crook, who says a £4m transfer has been struck.

Despite it not being the most extravagant of signings, Travers’ arrival is needed after the departures of Asmir Begovic and João Virginia.

But there is more reason why Moyes has decided to bring the Irish international in, and he might ruffle a few feathers at Everton.

Real reason behind Mark Travers’ imminent £4m Everton transfer

It’s a move that was needed for Everton with a lack of depth in the goalkeeping department, as Jordan Pickford, as good as he is, can’t be relied upon on his own.

Pickford’s been called the best Premier League goalkeeper, and it’s clear to see why after his standout performance for The Toffees over the years.

But adding a back-up in the form of Travers will certainly give Moyes what he wants in terms of options; however, there appears to be a deeper reason behind the decision to bring in the 26-year-old.

Despite being at Bournemouth, Travers played for Middlesbrough in the second half of last season, and his displays caught Moyes’ eye.

But according to Paddy Boyland from The Athletic, the Everton hierarchy feel they need ‘fresh blood’ in the ranks to compete with Pickford, with youngster Harry Tyrer currently the only one in line as it stands.

What Travers can offer to Everton as Pickford alternative

Of course, it will be a tremendously hard task for Travers to replace Pickford, but Moyes likes the feeling of competition.

There have been doubts over Everton’s shot-stopper, but not from Merseyside, instead from England, as Thomas Tuchel might prefer alternatives to Pickford.

This could lead the 31-year-old to consider his future and seek a move to a team competing in Europe, but Pickford loves working with Moyes.

He has been Everton’s main man for the last eight seasons, but Travers could certainly present himself after his time at Middlesbrough.

Adding to this, he’s come in clutch for Bournemouth at times, showing he’s not just Championship quality.

The 26-year-old is known to turn up for Andoni Iraola’s side when called upon, and did so last season.

Travers won’t be replacing Pickford, but if he takes the chances presented, £4m for a keeper of his quality could prove to be a masterclass from Moyes.
