Alan Shearer reacts on Match of the Day to worrying predicament that looms for Everton

Everton played their penultimate fixture at Goodison Park on Saturday, and drew 2-2 with Ipswich Town.

The Toffees are looking to finish the season strongly despite not really having anything to play for, but David Moyes’ side were held yesterday by the already relegated Tractor Boys.

And it was disappointing that Everton threw away a two-goal lead.

Beto and Dwight McNeil had put the hosts two goals to the good.

But Ipswich found a way back into the game through a stunning strike by Julio Enciso, before George Hirst equalised with a back post header.

Moyes will have been disappointed by the nature of the draw.

But fans will quickly move on from it, with the summer fast approaching – where a concerning situation awaits for Everton.

After Alan Shearer had analysed the good and the bad of Everton’s performance on Saturday night on Match of the Day, a graphic then flashed up of how many players stand to leave the club.

The squad is going to be looking very different for 2025/26, because as many as 14 players are out of contract this summer.

Reacting to the graphic, Shearer said: “And you (Gary Lineker) said, new owners, new ground, look at all those players out of contract! Six of seven regulars who are out of contract! So it’s going to be a huge summer for David Moyes and for Everton.”

Midfielder Idrissa Gueye could leave Everton after it was claimed he has received two concrete offers from Al-Ahli Saudi FC and Al-Ettifaq.

Previously it had been felt Gueye was reasonably likely to extend.

Abdoulaye Doucoure is another regular who seems set to move on from Everton, and has been mooted for a move to a newly promoted team for next season.

Everton fans have been impressed with how The Friedkin Group have handled themselves so far.

But the real work starts in the summer and lots of decisions need to be made.

Given the sheer amount there is to do, it’s likely they will not get absolutely everything spot on. So fans fans may need to temper their expectations a little.

But TFG have been methodical so far and have made some good calls, so there is reason to be optimistic about a good summer.
