Everton’s defeat at the weekend against Liverpool was engulfed in refereeing controversies.

David Moyes was left a frustrated figure after the Merseyside Derby on Saturday afternoon, with decisions not going his way.

However, some of Moyes’ comments have not gone down well on the red half of the city following the defeat.

Arne Slot has hit back at Moyes for his criticism of Liverpool time wasting during the second half of the game.

Everton were unable to take anything from the game, but there was certainly a feel of injustice from referee Darren England.

And one former Premier League referee has cast his thoughts on the performance of England in his first Merseyside Derby.

Chris Foy shares Darren England verdict after Liverpool vs Everton

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both hailed Iliman Ndiaye’s display, but the pair were also left in disbelief over some of England’s decisions.

The main issue was the yellow card shown to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for taking a free kick quickly.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, former Premier League referee Chris Foy has admitted he was left shocked by Dewsbury-Hall’s yellow card.

“I think if Darren had his time again, he probably would have made him take the free kick again and not caution,” said Foy.

“Because what I think it did was it drew unnecessary attention to himself. I’ve not seen one of these before. I just think, as I said, if you reflect on it you would just stop the game take the free kick again. We set it up, we take the free kick again and away we go.

“And it’s disappointing really because there is a lot of noise around this and for Darren it was probably the biggest Premier League game he’s refereed of his career to date.”

Jack Grealish was furious with England after full-time, and he made his thoughts known during his post-match interview.

Both Grealish and Moyes confronted England, who has been criticised heavily over the last couple of days.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at risk of suspension now

Although it is only five games into the Premier League campaign, Dewsbury-Hall is just one yellow card away from a one-game suspension.

Clearly, most of the damage had been done on the midfielder’s disciplinary record prior to the game at Anfield.

However, receiving a yellow card like he did on Saturday was not what he or Everton needed or deserved.

Rightfully, England has received a lot of criticism in the fallout from the game for his poor display in what was probably the biggest game of his career.
