Everton will still be feeling the effects of their 1-0 defeat to relegation favourites Southampton on the weekend.

The defeat leaves Everton in 16th place and still perilously close to the relegation zone ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

After the game, sections of the Everton fanbase urged the club to sack Sean Dyche and many tipped David Moyes to return to Goodison Park until the end of the season.

The Friedkin Group are about to sack Roma manager Ivan Juric, so they’re obviously prepared to make tough decisions when they become Everton’s new owners.

For now, though, Dyche is set to remain in charge and he blamed part of Saturday’s defeat on a VAR blunder.

Former referee Dermot Gallagher has just given his verdict on the decision.

Dermot Gallagher believes Jan Bednarek decision was correct

Dyche was left seething after the Southampton game as he felt Jan Bednarek should’ve been shown a red card for fouling Beto as he charged towards goal.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has now issued his verdict on the decision, speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch programme.

“This is all about the covering player. He’s out on the wing and there’s no doubt he’s going to come inside but, by that time, they think the covering player will get across,” Gallagher explains.

“It’s decided it’s a possible goalscoring opportunity, as opposed to an obvious goalscoring opportunity.”

Sue Smith also thinks it was the correct decision

Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith also believes it was the correct decision.

“I think it’s the right decision. I know Sean Dyche doesn’t think that,” Smith said.

“When I first saw it, I thought it had to be a red as he was bringing him down, but when you see Taylor Harwood-Bellis covering, I think he would have got across.”

Ultimately, Dyche has to take full responsibility for the defeat as his side just wasn’t good enough on the afternoon.

Everton had just 35 per cent possession and never really asserted their dominance.
