It seems like a direction David Moyes will take this window is the way of the Championship.

Despite the gap increasing between both leagues, Moyes clearly sees promise in the Championship.

This might be the first phase of The Friedkin Group’s plan at Everton as Moyes builds up his side.

Many players will be coming and going, with Everton set for contract talks with players.

As it’s clear outgoings will be happening soon, the Toffees boss might want to nail down his first few signings, and could do so with one player but just one obstacle remains.

Everton update on £15m transfer target Dan Neil

With the factors considered, Dan Neil could emerge as the perfect candidate for a midfielder in the summer.

He’s impressed for Sunderland in the Championship this season and shown he can play a box-to-box midfield role, which is something Moyes needs.

Sunderland are not entertaining interest in Neil but transfers will want to be completed quickly at Everton to Moyes’ dismay.

It’s clear that Neil wants Premier League football and a move to Everton will no doubt help both sides of the deal.

Darren Witcoop has now reported in the Sunday Mirror (27 April, page 65) that Everton are “big admirers” of Neil ahead of the summer window, as it seems like the 23-year-old will be a priority signing for Moyes.

The one obstacle Everton have in signing Neil

This is clearly a Moyes played, hard working, strong in duels and has shown brilliant leadership with the Mackams.

At just 23 this is a useful skill to have but the Toffees will still need to work hard to get this deal over the line.

It’s clear there is one obstacle, as with Sunderland completing the playoffs, they still have every chance to become a top flight club next season.

This will likely go against Everton with Neil probably staying at the Stadium of Light if promotion is secured.

Everton didn’t want Neil in January, but it’s become clear he’s a need from this summer window.
