Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye’s season is now over after Senegal’s World Cup exit.

In the early hours of Thursday morning (BST), Senegal were eliminated from the World Cup by Belgium in the most dramatic style possible.

Ndiaye and Gueye will now be able to rest and recover, with questions lying over both of their futures at Everton this summer.

Gueye’s contract at Everton has now expired, with the Toffees’ offer of a contract extension still on the table.

Given the midfielder’s focus is off the World Cup, an answer may arrive soon on his future, but Everton may want to consider the verdict on his performance against Belgium.

What the media said about Idrissa Gana Gueye vs Belgium

Senegal looked set to cruise through to the last 16 after taking a 2-0 lead against Belgium, but a stunning turnaround saw Gueye and Ndiaye’s dreams come to an end.

Romelu Lukaku sparked the comeback, with Gueye playing 96 minutes in Seattle.

The veteran midfielder did not exactly get a warm response from the Senegalese media after the game, with his age potentially starting to catch up with him.

Where has this version of Iliman Ndiaye been hiding for the last three months? 🤩

Welcome back, Ili!

“His experience was a huge asset in midfield. But as the match progressed, he faded physically and eventually lost his grip on the game,” said Foot Mercato.

“Not helped by Pape Thiaw’s substitutions, as he found himself rather isolated in the heart of midfield, he lacked the leadership to help his team during difficult moments.”

Gueye has already been criticised by the media at the World Cup this summer, having made his recovery from injury to play for Senegal.

“He had not been so influential in the game, but you also wonder whether his substitution early in extra time played into the hands of Belgium, who then took complete control of the midfield,” added SuperSport.

At the age of 36, there will be natural questions as to how much Gueye has still got to offer his next club physically.

Whether Gueye will sign a contract extension with Everton

The jury certainly remains out as to whether Gueye will commit another year of his career to Everton.

Gueye’s wife hinted towards an Everton exit as she took to social media to share an image of the Gueye family preparing for a house move.

It is not a great look for the veteran considering Everton have paid him handsomely over the years.

Regardless, Everton will not be standing still waiting on a decision from Gueye and his agents.

Hayden Hackney has now passed his Everton medical and is set to be announced as the first signing of the summer on Merseyside.

More midfield additions could also be made over the coming weeks.

Gueye’s agents are yet to respond to Everton’s contract offer, with the 36-year-old’s deal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium coming to an official end earlier this week.

The offer may well remain on the table, but perhaps Everton should consider moving on after what they have seen from Gueye at the World Cup.
