Everton will play their final Merseyside Derby game against Liverpool at Goodison Park next week.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in December but Storm Darragh postponed the Merseyside Derby due to safety concerns.

Two months on, Everton find themselves in a much better position with David Moyes having since replaced Sean Dyche.

Everton have also been able to pull themselves nine points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the game on Wednesday night.

With a move in the summer to their new state-of-the-art stadium, there is a place in history on the line for the Everton players to make a name for themselves in Goodison’s final derby.

And Jamie Carragher has now given the Toffees even more reason to strive for a win next week.

Jamie Carragher shares interesting Everton vs Liverpool verdict

Moyes is expected to make Everton changes against Bournemouth this weekend in the FA Cup with the derby coming up next week.

There is plenty to play for from an Everton perspective with a defeat potentially pulling the Toffees back in the relegation mix.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Thursday night, Carragher has admitted Everton could put a real dent in Liverpool’s race for the title.

“This has the capabilities to be a great season, when you look next week in the Premier League, that’s the biggest game of the season,” said the former Liverpool defender.

“Not because it’s Everton, Liverpool have been talking about a game-in-hand for about two months.

“The game-in-hand and the gap over Arsenal, if Liverpool win that they’ve almost got one-hand on the trophy, a nine-point lead, with 13 or 14 games to go is a huge lead with the form that Liverpool are in.”

Arne Slot has already praised Moyes following his appointment last month.

But the Toffees will be all out to avoid ending their time at Goodison Park with a defeat in their final ever Merseyside Derby on home soil.

Everton could pull away from the relegation battle

A win on Wednesday night for Everton could really transform their season.

Not only would it be a statement win against a Liverpool side who have impressed both in the Premier League and Champions League, but it could take them above Manchester United.

Three points would see Everton catch up in games played and take them up to 13th spot in the table with a 12-point cushion on the bottom three.

Moyes has remained coy about the threat of relegation, but a 12-point cushion would go a long way towards keeping the Toffees safe.

But preventing the Reds from securing bragging rights in the final Goodison derby would perhaps be sweetest of it all.
