Jamie Redknapp wowed by player who now looks ‘incredibly happy’ after struggling at Everton

Everton’s weekend could not have gone much worse if they tried in what was a dismal start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Sean Dyche‘s side suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the opening game of their final season at Goodison Park.

And things are not going to get any easier for Everton who will be travelling down to Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend without Ashley Young.

It has to be remembered that this is only the first of 38 games but the Toffees did not do much to get their fans excited for the remainder of the season.

To add to the frustration, there was a VAR error which saw an Everton penalty overturned due to a technical issue.

And as if things could not get much worse for Everton, there were events elsewhere on the day which only rubbed salt into the wound.

Jamie Redknapp wowed by player who Everton have now sold

It was an afternoon to forget at Goodison with the fans showing their frustrations by leaving earlier than the full time whistle with empty seats visible around the ground.

This did not go down well with Dyche who issued a very blunt message to the Everton fans who left the stadium before full time.

But it is what happened elsewhere in the Premier League which will also sting for Everton fans with Jamie Redknapp left really impressed by a former Everton player.

Speaking on Sky Sports‘ coverage [7:45 pm 17/8/24] of Aston Villa’s win over West Ham in Saturday’s late kick off, Redknapp said how much happier Amadou Onana looked playing under Unai Emery.

“I said before the game that I wanted to see more from him, but it isn’t always easy at an Everton side that are maybe a little bit more direct, at times struggling, trying to win games to stay in the Premier League,” said Redknapp.

“It’s tough. Every single game was a battle whereas here you can see he is enjoying it, he probably looks at himself and thinks, I am a footballer, I want to play, get me on the ball, I can make things happen, and he seems very settled, he seems incredibly happy.”

Amadou Onana scores on his Aston Villa debut

Onana made the £50m move to Aston Villa earlier in the summer in a deal which will certainly have helped Villa’s spreadhseet.

But watching him get off to the perfect start with a goal will have stung considering just how poor they performed in their own game.

Over 5374 minutes of action as an Everton player, Onana was able to return four goals and it took the Belgian a mere four minutes to get off the mark for Villa.

Despite the frustrations, Everton have to pull themselves back around for the weekend as they are in real danger of facing a Spurs side who could make it zero points from the opening two games.
