Everton’s run of five games without defeat came to an end on Saturday afternoon as they suffered a damaging 1-0 defeat to Southampton, who were rock bottom of the Premier League table heading into the South Coast clash.

The Toffees failed to take their chance against Southampton, who have now gained points on their relegation competitors.

There was a great deal of frustration among the fan base after the game and some supporters even called for Sean Dyche to be sacked.

The embarrassing result leaves his job in a perilous position but with the Friedkin Group not yet in post, he’s expected to remain put for now.

In Dyche’s post-match comments, though, he suggested that a VAR blunder was partly to blame for his side’s loss.

Sean Dyche suggests VAR decision was partly to blame for 1-0 loss to Southampton

Speaking post-match, Dyche claimed that Jan Bednarek should have been shown a red card for his challenge on Beto.

He insisted that it was denying a goalscoring opportunity but Beto’s honesty to try and remain on his feet ultimately punished him.

“But I am very, very surprised by the chance for the sending off,” the former Burnley boss explained, via the Liverpool Echo.

“When you are an ex-defender, you are thinking you are off – as soon as you do that. Beto is clearly in his stride, he is breaking across.

“The thing that worries me about the game is players that don’t go down and roll around don’t get decisions and if you do they seem to. I have mentioned this many times, players who are trying to stay on their feet – you can see clearly Beto is trying to stay on his feet to score a goal, he doesn’t do anything and nothing gets given other than a yellow card.

“I’m amazed… the defender is a long way off in my opinion. I can’t see how he’s going to get there. And they don’t give that and I think that is a massive decision in a game like this.”

Everton have to beat West Ham on Saturday

Everton simply have to avoid defeat against West Ham United on Saturday or else fans will start to turn even more than they already have.

The Hammers are struggling themselves and only reside two places above Dyche’s side, so it’s imperative they gain a positive result.

Plus, they have a tough run of games leading up to the new year, so these are the games they must win, really.
