Over recent hours, Everton have moved a step closer to finally securing the signing of Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough.
Everton’s summer transfer business eventually looks set to take off as David Moyes is to welcome the first of the arrivals on Merseyside.
It has been claimed that Everton have agreed a deal with Middlesbrough for Hackney, but he may not be the only arrival over the coming days.
How would you feel about Hayden Hackney becoming Everton’s first signing? 🤩
The Athletic are now suggesting negotiations are back underway between Everton and Chelsea over Tyrique George.

Everton’s Hayden Hackney agreement and Tyrique George talks highlight changing transfer plans
After his initial loan stint on Merseyside, Everton did not opt to sign George permanently for the £25m agreed fee with Chelsea.
However, talks are now ongoing to reduce that fee and bring the youngster back to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Landing both Hackney and George would make for two interesting additions in the summer market and would surely highlight the strategy being used by Angus Kinnear.
How do you feel about Moyes’ treatment of Tyrique George? 🫣
There is a clear interest in signing young, English talents at Everton as they seemingly plan for long-term success with these additions.
- Tyler Dibling
- Tyrique George
- Hayden Hackney
- Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall
Over the last two summer windows, The Friedkin Group have funded some exciting homegrown additions on Merseyside.
Adding players like the above to James Garner and Jarrad Branthwaite provides Everton with a strong English cohort for the coming years.
Jordan Pickford has been criticised at this summer’s World Cup, but Evertonians know full well what he brings to their side.
For many, adding so many exciting English talents like Hackney, George and Dibling would be seriously encouraging, but it will raise some questions on Merseyside.
Moyes did not utilise either Dibling or George during their time under the 63-year-old in the 2025/26 campaign.
| 2025/26 (Premier League for Everton) | Tyler Dibling | Tyrique George |
| Appearances | 14 | 11 |
| Starts | 4 | 1 |
| Minutes | 350 | 240 |
Unless something drastically changes over the summer, bringing George back could well feel like a wasted transfer due to the lack of minutes he played during his loan spell.
Everton planning for life after David Moyes
Heading into the new season, Moyes only has 12 months remaining on his current deal with the Toffees.
Interestingly, Moyes has become the favourite to become Scotland’s next manager after Steve Clarke suddenly resigned following their World Cup exit.
Having witnessed just how little trust Moyes put in his Everton squad last season, perhaps the addition of these youngsters could be a nod to the club planning for the long-term without the Scot.
Surely the first question George will be asking Everton this summer is, ‘why should I rejoin whilst Moyes is at the club?’
The 20-year-old was given one start in the Premier League after joining on loan, which does not provide any incentive to sign permanently this summer.
There has to be a plan in place to change how Everton use their full squad going forward, with Moyes’ future potentially coming under scrutiny as a result.
