Wednesday night’s defeat against Aston Villa was not the Everton homecoming David Moyes will have dreamt of.
Everton’s struggles continued on Merseyside as Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a huge opportunity late on to secure a point.
It was clear Moyes is stunned by how poor Everton have become over recent years, as he admitted as much in his post-match interviews.
The Toffees are going to have to find an answer over the coming hours as they get set to welcome Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

Going into the game on the weekend, Moyes’ side sit just one point above the bottom three following the midweek results.

Paul Merson sees only one winner in Everton vs Tottenham
Over the last few days, Paul Merson has criticised Everton’s Moyes appointment, suggesting it would not make any difference.
The Sky Sports pundit believes the 60-year-old is not going to offer the Toffees anything dramatically different to what Sean Dyche did.
And speaking to Sportskeeda, the former Arsenal midfielder claimed he can only see Tottenham winning on Sunday.
“Nothing changed with Everton the other day, I said that before didn’t I? It’s not like Sean Dyche left a lot of players out in the cold and David Moyes could just come in and be like, ‘I’ll just fine-tune this guy to perform a miracle’,” said Merson.
“Tottenham are always Spursy, but I believe they will have too much for Everton in this game. Spurs will open the game up and I don’t think Everton have the firepower to outscore the visitors. The hosts can only hope of keeping it tight at the back, but I’m not sure they can do that for long here.
“Everton will be dreading at the possibility of an open game here and that will play into Spurs’ hands.”
Moyes has already angered Everton striker Beto in his first game back as the Everton manager, after not starting the 26-year-old.
But Moyes has not returned to Goodison to make friends with the Scotsman simply tasked with keeping the Blues afloat in the Premier League this season.
Everton need to capitalise on Tottenham’s awful form
On paper, Sunday’s game is one which the Toffees may not be expected to take much from against one of the big six.
However, the game at Goodison could actually be the perfect opportunity for Moyes to get his first win as Everton boss.
Micah Richards was worried by Everton’s loss to Villa, but they will be coming up against a side who are struggling even more than them on Sunday.
Spurs are really up against it currently with their long list of injuries crippling Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
Everton may empathise with the Lilywhites on that front, but a win for Moyes’ side would close the gap on 14th-placed Spurs to just four points.
