Referee Sam Barrott told he may have made a big error during Everton vs Aston Villa

Everton tasted defeat in David Moyes’ first game as manager in a narrow 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

It was not the fairytale start to Moyes’ tenure back at Goodison Park with Ollie Watkins’ goal proving the difference.

The Toffees were coming into the game knowing they were sitting dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Moyes had a message of congratulations from Tim Cahill ahead of the game, but the 60-year-old’s return did not quite go as planned.

Everton were found struggling in front of goal once again as they failed to add to their total of 15 goals in the league.

But they may well feel aggrieved by one big decision which referee Sam Barrott made against them.

Amadou Onana should have been sent off on Everton return

Everton sold Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50m last summer, but the midfielder has enjoyed his football since leaving.

He found himself on the winning side again on Wednesday night on his return to Goodison.

However, BBC Sport pundit Marc Albrighton felt the Belgium international could consider himself very lucky to have not been shown a red card.

“Amadou Onana is very lucky there. He is treading a very fine line now having already been booked,” he said.

“He put his hands on the back of Orel Mangala. Very close to a red.”

Onana was able to see the game out on Merseyside after getting away with one which could have changed the remainder of the game.

Since leaving, Onana has admitted he’s enjoying life at Villa and he certainly will have enjoyed the game on Wednesday evening.

The same issues remain for Everton upfront

Everton’s biggest issue this season has been finding the back of the net, and that remained the case against Villa.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was given the nod by Moyes in his first game as the new manager, but it was not one which provided a goal.

Beto is receiving transfer interest from Italy this month as he was dropped to the bench after his FA Cup start.

But scoring goals appears to remain an issue in Moyes’ return.

It is believed Moyes wants to provide Beto with an opportunity, so it will be interesting to see how long he may stick with Calvert-Lewin.
