Everton are losing ground in the race to sign Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester City.
This summer, Everton are looking to improve their midfield, having already secured the future of Idrissa Gana Gueye.
David Moyes has now seen his side play for the first time in pre-season following their draw away to Accrington Stanley.
The draw against the League Two side got some valuable minutes in the tank for a number of players, with Harrison Armstrong impressing for Everton.
It is a position which Everton have cover in terms of numbers, but Everton fans have shared concerns about James Garner towards the end of last season.
As the Toffees consider their options this summer, it appears Ndidi is a player who may have evaded their grasp.

Everton set to miss out on Wilfred Ndidi to Bundesliga move
Everton have shown an interest in Ndidi, who looks set to leave Leicester City following their relegation back to the Championship.
It is claimed the Nigerian holds a relegation release clause in his deal, which is set to be triggered in the coming days.
According to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Ndidi now looks ‘more likely’ to move to Germany this summer.
It is claimed that Mainz and Hoffenheim are showing a keen interest, but Borussia Dortmund are also aware of Ndidi’s situation.
Although it looks like he won’t be joining Everton, one club is going to land a real bargain this summer for just £9m.
Everton may already have turned their attention elsewhere, though.
Amid the Ndidi report, it has also been claimed that Everton have sent an offer to sign Douglas Luiz on loan, with the obligation to buy.
Everton need a long-term replacement for Idrissa Gana Gueye
Everton fans were delighted to see Gueye sign a new deal, which will keep him around for the next year.
However, at the age of 35, Everton have to be considering a long-term plan to replace him.
Armstrong is keen to impress at Everton, but the Blues will surely want to bring in another midfielder with experience to potentially partner the 18-year-old in the coming years.
It is clear this summer is huge for Armstrong, but Moyes will also want to bring in an experienced figure ahead of the move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
